Editing Unit 16

What is editing?

  • Editing is the art of assembling shots together to tell the visual story that is a film.

Types of editing (narrative)

Linear narrative: Point A to point B

Non-linear narrative: Point B to point C to point A

Editing Techniques

Ellipses: Narrative device. The omission of a section of the story that is obvious enough for the public to fill in the gaps. Eg Travel.

Parallel Editing: Cross cutting - Alternating storyline.

Match Cut: Basic cut, change of perspective.

Kuleshov Effect: Effect of juxtaposition - E.g Switching a shot between a face of a man looking at a fire, and then back to his face. Viewers derive more meaning/emotion from two sequential shots than just one.

Reaction shots: Shot of a face in response to an event.

Insert shots: Similar to match cut, but with a more interesting perspective to fill in space.

180 Degree Rule - The camera is placed

Drive - Hallway scene (180 Degree rule/Kuleshov effect)

This scene from Nicholas Winding Refn's 'Drive' effectively demonstrates the 180° rule (Or the lack thereof) as well as the Kuleshov effect. In this hallway encounter, the protagonist's eyeline lies in the top left power point of the frame. Instead of following the 180° rule, Refn goes directly and intentionally against it by placing his counterpart's eyeline in the same power point, despite the fact that they are standing accross from each other. This creates tension between the two as they both attempt to dominate the scene - or at least that portion of the frame.

FEEDBACK TASK 1: PRESENTATION

Chester Weiley

TEACHER REMARK:

Two excellent example of ellipses editing and the Kuleshov effect.  I am extremely impressed by your analytical approach and seemingly natural yet creative use of presenting it to an audience.  If you were to follow the grading criteria you surpass all aspects of simply describing and explaining both techniques.  You instead adopt a critical approach that is both informative and mature in its approach but most importantly extremely engaging a well thought out.  You should be very happy with your outcome, this is the kind of work we are hoping all students will produce in the near future.

Student Response:

While I personally think that the second half could have been improved, I agree that it was acceptable to hand in. I’m glad that my attempt at a more serious video went over well.
